Meet Your Neighbor: Deb Martin
Interviewed by Christy Cerrone.
Continuing our series of interviews with our Southern Gables neighbors, to help us get to know and appreciate each other. If you know a neighbor you’d like to have featured, contact Christy, information below.
Deb, how long have you lived in Southern Gables? My husband Keith and I moved to Southern Gables in August 1989.
What are a few things that you like the most about the Southern Gables community? The best part is having our own neighborhood school, Green Gables Elementary. Our children went there and I love how the principal currently, Suanne Hawley, is so involved with our neighborhood. The community garden is just one example of how the neighbors are included with the school. In addition, It is a quiet and safe community. I can walk at night with my dog and I always feel safe.
Do you have a favorite memory with your Southern Gables neighbors? I know almost everyone on my street and most of the neighbors have lived here a long time. I so appreciate the kindness and support of the people in Southern Gables. We love to walk to Magill’s World of Ice Cream where one of our daughters worked there for 6 years.
What is the most neighborly experience you’ve had or seen in our neighborhood? I admire the gathering of so many neighbors to participate in the leaf collecting. I also enjoy having Westwoods Church as part of our community. They have helped the elderly with outside chores and provide food, through Joy’s Kitchen, for anyone. And they mean anyone, no requirements and no questions asked — which is really something in these times of work instability for so many people.
What are your hobbies? I love to hike, swim, and take walks with my husband and daughters.
Do you have a favorite quote or saying you can share with us? “To get better you have to step out of your comfort zone. You can’t do the same things you’ve always done and improve.” by Jordan Burroughs.
Is there anything else you want us to know about you? Lakewood has been my home since the age of two. I grew up in Lakewood, went to Bear Creek Elementary, Carmody Middle School and Bear Creek High School. I have worked for Jeffco Public Schools for the last eight years.
