That Was the Neighborhood Night Out

πππππππ€π§ππ€π€π πππππ© ππͺπ© last Friday drew about 750 people from all around the Southern Gables neighborhood and the Green Gables School community. We had music, games, bouncing kids, face painting, lots of neighborly interaction for everyone. With perfect weather this year, Magill’s World of Ice Cream cups were a perfect accompaninment to the free hot dogs, chips and lemonade as neighbors and friends browsed around the booths and visited with each other. Our Selected Business Supporters and community organizations. showed their stuff, and in the free raffle five people walked off with cash prizes of $50 and $100. All in all, a good night.
It took a lot of volunteer effort and cooperation to put on the event. Judy Whitten and Liza Patty bought the hot dogs, chips, and lemonade, and Jabin Cook did the grilling. Taylor’s Rentals provided the tables and chairs, and they were wrangled in and out by Roger Hanlon, Erwin Bunzli, Marnie Crowe, Marcel Guajardo, Sam Sotiros, Ken Fischer, Jeff Bair, Michelle Tovrea, Joe Woelkers, Liza Patty, James Johnson, and a pair of Bruces: Loftis and me. Marci DeMott, along with Ken and Jeff, staffed the entrance and gave out the free raffle tickets as people came in. Marci also filled in with a lot of gopher work, all of it with a cheerful smile and at top speed. Brad and Liz Reed have volunteered over five years helping cook hotdogs, and Heather Dirschl and Kendyl Dirschl have volunteered at least two years at the drink station. Westwoods Community Church provided volunteers for the Bouncy Place and the always-popular Face Painting booth. Many of the business and community organizations that participated brought volunteer workers as well, so the net effect was a tremendous amount of generous volunteer energy, enough to power a steam engine – or, in more practical terms, a great community event.Β Β
