Southern Gables Book Club Selection for MaySouthern Gables

___

In “City of Thieves” David Benioff spins a tale from wartime Leningrad, based on his grandparents’ experiences in the besieged city. Life in those times was bounded by uncertainty and the absurdity of every facet of life under impossible conditions. David’s grandfather Lev, scrounging and dodging for survival, is arrested for looting and thrown in prison with a charismatic military deserter named Kolya. The two of them are sentenced to be executed. But there’s an out – the Colonel wants a cake. A lovely cake, a perfect cake for his daughter’s wedding. With such a wondrous wedding the war will melt away. But first there must be eggs to make the cake. Eggs, in a starving city under relentless and brutal siege. There’s the path to freedom: a dozen eggs for a pardon. Life will be perfect for the beautiful daughter, the Colonel will be happy, and the wretched prisoners will be set free. Fail, and the firing squad. Under threat of death, what would you do for an egg?

Some stories give you a feeling that you’ve been there, even though you couldn’t have been, and you’re expected to go along with outrageous situations in suspended reality. “City of Thieves” by David Benioff will have you questioning your sense of reality, the kind of dreamlike disconnectedness that stays with you.
