The Blue Zone Ideal
___
We love Lakewood, but is it Shangri-La? When my kids were little we loved the movie “Lost Horizon” about a hidden paradise on earth where harmony reigned, life moved easily and freely, and illnesses were unknown. Healthy and strong, people lived with wisdom and easy grace. No one grew old. Is there any place in the world that approaches that ideal? Well, almost. There are several, and there seems to be a pattern with common factors that could be instructive to having a better life for all.
What are Blue Zones?
There are regions in the world where an unusually high proportion of the residents live for over 100 years. Some of the aspects of their lives resemble the mythical Shangri-La, with easy and natural work and play promoting healthy bodies and minds. Stress is minimized through intentional practices, nutrition is wholesome and natural. People live with a sense of purpose, enjoying the support of robust social networks, belonging, and connections.
In 2005, researcher Dan Buettner published a study of five regions where this happens naturally. He deduced nine principles of living that seemed to be correlated with the observed longevity. Our neighbor Glenn McCarthy has been working with an organization that aims to bring these “Blue Zone” life aspects to Lakewood. You are invited to come and learn about these fascinating principles.
